The film The Golden Ass is an adaptation that casts the luxury resort Careyes, in Mexico, as a backdrop for Niccolò Machiavelli’s satirical poem "The Golden Ass," itself a modernization of Apuleius' "The Metamorphoses", the only Ancient Roman novel in Latin to survive in its entirety. The tale narrates the travels of an aristocratic man turned into an ass by a magic spell and forced into labor by landowners.
